A roaring fire illuminates bolts of woven silk, wool, and linen hanging from wooden beams. ANAHITA draws a thread through a loom with practiced precision. TARIQ sets down a heavy leather satchel.

"Look closely at this dye. The blue comes from the mountains of Badakhshan; the red, from crushed insects of the Mediterranean. We do not just trade goods, Tariq."

"We trade who we are. I spoke to a scholar in Persia who writes on papyrus from Egypt. Our ancestors lived isolated in the dust—now, a single thread binds us across mountains."
